Before both players sit down at the setup, they must come to an agreement which side they will play on (who will be on the Player One side and who will be on the Player Two side). If an agreement cannot be reached, a game of rock paper scissors will determine who gets to pick their side. Players will then enter offline Versus Mode and ensure that their buttons are set up correctly. Players will then select their characters, and either player may elect to do double-blind character selection. Players will then select a random stage or mutually agreed stage and play game one. The winner of the preceding game must keep their character selection for the next game while the loser may switch their character.
