Pump It Up Phoenix Main Tournament Rules
Rules Summary (Please see Page 2 and onwards for more details): The Open Division and Pro Division are now part of one unified tournament with a 120-player cap. 24 players will qualify directly into Pro Division via qualifiers, and up to 96 players can participate in Open Division. The Top 8 Open players will advance into the Pro Division but will start on the Losers side, making a total of 32 Pro players. The Open Division will still use a gauntlet format: players compete on 2 Arcade-length songs per round, and those with the highest combined scores advance. There will be no curated song list this year. Instead, 5 charts per difficulty will be randomized each round, and players will have 10 minutes to ban 1 chart per difficulty. The progression will be: All non-Pros → 64 → 32 → 16 → 8 players (subject to change based on player count). The Open bracket will begin at S16/S17 and end at S22/D23. If more than 64 players enter Open, warm-up songs in Open will be removed to keep the event on schedule. The Pro Division will now be a fully double-elimination head-to-head bracket. Its gauntlet portion has been removed. Direct qualification into Pro will be based on your best 3 of 4 qualifier scores combined. To qualify directly, you must place in the Top 24 qualifying totals. This year's qualifiers are:
All matches except finals are Best-of-3. All finals (Winners Finals, Losers Finals, and Grand Finals) will now be Best-of-5. The pick/ban system remains the same as last year. Day 1 Pro players are given 1 warm-up song, while Day 2 Pro players are given 2. The Women’s Division and side tournaments are not being removed this year. More details will be announced later. There is a tiny chance this tournament will be run in the new Phoenix 2 game.
Schedule (Tentative): Friday, July 17: 11:00am – 4:00pm: Open Division 4:00pm – 9:00pm: Pro Division (Up to Top 8) Saturday, July 18: 11:00am – 2:00pm: Women's Division 2:00pm – 2:30pm: Pro Division Top 8 Photo and Opening Player Interviews 2:30pm – 8:00pm: Pro Division Top 8 Matches Sunday, July 19: Co-op and other Side Tournaments: TBD Open Division This year’s Open Division will use a 4-round gauntlet. In each round, 5 Arcade-length charts per difficulty will be drawn at random. Players will have 10 minutes to ban 1 chart per difficulty using a Google form provided on Discord, and the least-banned chart in each difficulty will be selected.
Round 1 uses two separate pools. There will be one shared voting phase for both pools. For each difficulty, the two least-banned charts will be selected, then assigned to the two pools by coin flip.
After Round 1, the format switches to one pool. In each remaining round, one chart per difficulty will be selected: the chart with the fewest bans. Any tie for least bans will be resolved by coin flip or number randomizer.
The progression is: Round 1 (S16/S17): Two pools; Top 32 in each pool advance Round 2 (S18/S19): One pool of 64; Top 32 advance Round 3 (S20/S21): One pool of 32; Top 16 advance Round 4 (S22/D23): One pool of 16; Top 8 advance to Pro Division, Losers side
Card Draw/Voting Example: This example uses Round 2 (S18/S19). Five charts are drawn for each difficulty. Each player may ban 1 chart per difficulty. After voting, the least-banned chart in each difficulty is selected for play. If multiple charts are tied for the fewest bans, the selection is decided by a randomizer.
Example outcome: S18: ALiVE S18 receives the fewest bans, so it is selected. S19: Miss S’ Story S19 and La Cinquantine S19 are tied for the fewest bans, so a coin flip/randomizer decides the selection. Miss S’ Story S19 is chosen.
Players would then play ALiVE S18 and Miss S’ Story S19. Pro Division The Pro Division will consist entirely of double-elimination head-to-head play. It will have 32 players—24 players seeded by qualifiers into Winners side and top 8 Open players seeded by Round 4 Open performance into the Losers side. The previous gauntlet stage has been removed entirely in Pro Division. Matches are Best-of-3 until Winners Finals, Losers Finals, and Grand Finals, which are Best-of-5. Warmups will be given in the Pro Division, but players are not allowed to warm up with songs that were selected in their respective match's card draw.
Qualification and seeding are based on the sum of your best 3 of 4 qualifier scores. In other words, your lowest score is dropped. In the case of a tie, the dropped score will be used to tie break. The Top 24 players by total score qualify directly into Pro Division. The other path to Pro Division is placing Top 8 in Open Division, which seeds you into Losers Bracket. Lastly, the top 8 seeds will be given a Bye in their first round.
The qualifiers for Pro Division this year are:
Qualifiers must be played on official Pump It Up software (no simulators). Qualifying scores must come from after March 15, 2026, 12:00am ET. Pro Division qualifiers are due on June 28th, 2026 at 11:59pm ET. They can be submitted here.
Example: A player submits the following qualifying scores: Underworld S23: 987,955 Ghroth S23: 982,534 4NT D24: 985,636 iRELLiA D24: 990,426
In this example, the player's score for Ghroth S23 will be dropped from their qualifying score total because it is their lowest raw scores out of the four scores. Their qualifying score will be the total of their other three scores: 987,955 + 985,636 + 990,426 = 2,964,017. This total score will be used towards qualification and seeding.
Card Draw Before each match, players will complete a card draw: Best-of-3: 11 charts drawn Best-of-5: 17 charts drawn
Charts are drawn according to the distribution below. Players then take turns banning and protecting charts according to the diagram. Songs are played in the order they are protected. The remaining chart becomes the tiebreaker.
- Difficulty ranges are subject to change
Players will take turns banning and protecting charts according to the diagram below:
Songs will be played in the order in which they were protected and the remaining song after all the picks and bans will be the tiebreaking song for the set. Pro Division Day-Specific Details Day 1: Players share the same cabinet, alternating for Doubles and playing together for Singles. The higher seed chooses Doubles order and Singles side. Four cabinets will be used. Event Mode will be used for logistical reasons. Play continues through Top 8. Card draws will be done in advance. Players will be given 1 warm up Singles song before their match. Day 2: Play begins with Losers Round 5 and then Winners Semifinals. Matches will be played across two cabinets. The higher seed chooses the cabinet. Premium Free Play will be enabled so players can save scores. Players who qualify for Day 2 may not enter another Saturday tournament that conflicts with their scheduled match. A delay of more than 10 minutes may result in a match loss. Card draws will be done live at the start of the match and will be shown to the audience. Players will be given 2 warm up songs before their match.
Grand Finals Bracket Reset In the rare case of a Grand Finals Bracket Reset and in consideration of players' physicality, the match may turn to Best-of-1. It will take the pick/ban phase of Best-of-5, but will replace all protects with bans, ending with a single tiebreaker to determine 1st Place. If both players agree, they may play a standard Best-of-5 instead.
Prize Pool: This tournament will have the following Top 8 payout distribution: 1st Place: 40% 2nd Place: 25% 3rd Place: 15% 4th Place: 7% 5th-6th Place: 4% 7th-8th Place: 2.5%
General Rules All mods from Speed, Noteskin, and Display categories are allowed. Mods in the Path and Alternate categories are not allowed in most stages. "4199 Clause": DR will be allowed in Pro Division, although the player will have to play alone. JT mods are allowed in both tournament play and qualifiers. BGA Dark will be defaulted unless both players agree to BGA on. All Open rounds with only Singles will be played on Free Play mode with Premium mode on. Matches with Doubles will be played in Event Mode. In the extremely rare circumstance where both players fail out with a 50-miss hold during the Singles stages, both players will be given 0 points. All footwear are allowed in this tournament (e.g., shoes, Skinners, and socks). Barefoot play is not allowed. In the event of a pad call, the issue MUST be recreated by the player on a specific sensor. A 15 lbs on-site weight will be used to test the sensor. Should the pad’s malfunction be a significant factor in the result of a round, a replay may be issued. Otherwise, there will be no replays issued to players. If an attendant entered into more than 3 tournaments becomes a hard blocker (i.e. the tournament cannot move any matches forward without them), a DQ may be issued to keep the tournament on schedule. If you have another event conflicting with the Pump It Up tournament, please let us know so we can best accommodate. Baby powder must be applied off pads. Windex/Febreeze usage is also allowed. The center strip mod will not be done on the main 4 cabinets. In order words, the center metal strips will be left on. No intentional disrupting of players during matches. No violence, discrimination, or other unsavory behavior towards other competitors will be allowed. Tournament organizers will have the discretion to remove rule-breaking players from the tournament. Rules are subject to change based on tournament organizer discretion.
